I began painting in 2007 when I retired from the Sonoma County Human Services Department. The first class I took was through the Senior Center in Sebastopol. The instructor asked me what medium I preferred. I didn’t know what “medium” meant, but I looked down at the instructor’s table and pointed at a lovely watercolor. “That,” she said, “is a watercolor. Here’s a list of what you’ll need.” I painted for several years, took a few drawing classes, and then started going to Marilyn Sommer’s studio to paint with accomplished painters and a wonderful teacher, Michael Coy. He encouraged us, advised us, and had us enter our work in the Graton Gallery with the name: Silala Studio Painters. He continues to encourage, advise, and expose us to eclectic art.
Some months after joining the Silala Studio Painters, I joined Art Workshop of Western Sonoma County (AWS). They have also encouraged me and exposed me to even more art and techniques.
From all that inspiration, I have painted with oils, pastels, acrylics, watercolors, and gouache. Each has its own peculiarities, beauty and delights.
