CHRISTINE McNAMARA writes:

My love of Japanese papers and textiles began during a summer in Sendai, Japan, as a high school exchange student. After getting my BA in Studio Art from Stanford, I spent another summer in Japan and my appreciation of its art and culture deepened.

During a workshop several years ago I rediscovered Japanese papers and found they were available in the U.S. and Canada. I began collecting papers but was unsure how to use them in my work. Finally I had the courage to do some abstract collages, using watercolors or acrylics to stain the textured paper. Katazome and Chiogami papers (Japanese stencil techniques) are among my favorites.

Recently I began incorporating empty black tea bags, dried and unfolded. I am also experimenting with textiles such as Japanese Boro patches.

I use acrylic matte medium or Yes glue to paste my collage papers onto archival surfaces. The works on wood panels are sealed with acrylic satin-finish varnish so they don’t need to be framed behind glass.

My intention is that my collages will show my positive spirit and love of nature through their harmonious colors and designs. I hope others will enjoy them as much as I do.
